Real Friends...

REAL friends will tell you the truth.
They'll let you know when...
... you need a breath mint (without letting everyone within earshot know).
... they can help you with homework and tell you when you should work on it by yourself.
... you hurt someone else with your words.... you hurt them with your words.
... you're hurting yourself by doing stupid things.
... you're wrong.
... you're right.
... they can listen to your problems, and when it's not a good time to listen because they're preoccupied.

REAL friends are rare because of the type of honesty required.
When you find one, do all you can to keep him/her. An honest friend who only has your welfare in mind is worth more than a hundred who'll tell you what they think you want to hear.
